Chayn Empower Women Against Violence and Oppression.

We are talking this week to Hera Hussain, founder of Chayn.co, a global platform that empowers women against violence and oppression.
Chayn means “Solace”, “Peace” in Urdu. Chayn is also an award-winning, open-source project that leverages technology to empower women against violence and oppression so they can live happier and healthier lives.

Running solely on the passion of more than 300 skilled volunteers from 13 countries, Chayn leverages technology to address the problems women face today in a dozen countries. Their resources are openly licensed so charities around the world can use, remix and distribute their work!
Their design principle: “Design with, not for”

In this video interview, Hera tells us about…
•    how she came to the idea of setting up Chayn, primarily in the UK and Pakistan.
•    why she opts for mainstream simple ICT tools to empower women and why the organization makes a point to design tool with survivors not “for” them. Survivors are the experts and they become the producers of tools and solutions, that are really helpful to them.
•    the good practice around Tech For Good hackatons, especially how to avoid the stereotypes and biases often present in these events.
•    how Chayn manages to reach out to people who need information and resources the most, and how Chayn transforms their resources as a collaborative process with their users, wherever their come from.
•    a couple of stories of change, that Chayn contributed to.
•    the type of questions she would like people to ask her.
•    the people she would like to see more at the forefront of the sector, and the people from front line. services and government representatives she would like to work with to make a breakthrough.
•    what you need to do if you want to take part in the Chayn movement.

Chayn was recently listed as one of the 50 New Radicals list by Nesta and New Observer
