Girls in Malawi show resilience despite cultural and practical challenges of getting to school: 13-year-old Shakira Yakiti organizes home visits to girls who’ve dropped out of school and works with teenage mothers to encourage them to return to school; Chrissa, a single mother with twins, continues to go to school despite being ostracized by her peers; and Christie, who dropped out of school due to child marriage and extreme poverty, wants to go back.

“We are always proud when we see a girl coming back to school,” Shakira said.
